What is the real benefit of cutting a sim card yourself? Is it just to keep from buying another sim card?

Yes, or so you don't have to go to the carrier store to get the correct size.

Only real benefits is a money, time saving thing.

In exchange for the cost of getting a replacement or someone else to cut it, you DIY. but it does take effort on your end.
