Should I back up my files before I do a backup?

Simple question about WP 8.1

When updating to 8.1 from 8... will i need to backup my files and such?
Or the update wont clear my phone?

The update won't clear your phone so it is save to update and after the update, 8.1 back ups you're phone configuration so in case you get a new phone or reset your phone you only have to log in with your Microsoft account and it will configure your phone almost automatically.

I just went to 8.1 today. Didn't back up my phone and yet...everything was there. Brilliant.

If you are using Developer Preview to go from WP8 to WP8.1, you just need to ensure your phone is completely charged and then go out an exercise for about 40 minutes and everything will be running as normal without having to back up anything. I have updated 4 devices like this without any issues.
