Phone is hot and battery completely drained

Last night, I fully charged my phone but this morning (less than 7 hours later), I woke up to find the phone was very hot and wouldn't turn on. The battery had completely drained and I don't know why. After I charged my phone last night, I checked emails and Facebook before turning the wifi off. I've tried all tips to extend battery life in the past, so don't think it is this. I'm not sure why it would lose charge so quickly, or why it would overheat when it's not being used.
