Windows 8.1 connection using WAY to much data

My windows phone uses up way too much data when I'm not connected to wi-fi. It's not when i'm not using the phone but when I am using internet explorer or xbox smartglass, etc... My usage drains like crazy. I used internet explorer for less than 5 minutes and it ate up nearly a quarter of my data limit, which is 2GB. Why is this happening? That is a ridiculous amount of data for 5 minutes of internet connection.

It would help us id the issues if you can tell us what was running in the background at that time. what was allowed to automatically update and things like that.
