Why Facebook and calendar app run in background if we open it once. Until we close it by long pressing back button and close the opened apps.

They're most likely there to aid in quickly accessing the apps, even if you accidentally close them, or just want them to stay in the background.
I expect this to have more significance once Threshold comes along.

There are quite a few apps that do this. I believe this is a new features in 8.1. Don't remember this happening on 8.0. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

It's a new feature of 8.1; the back button isn't meant to close apps anymore, it's just meant to go back. You close apps by long pressing the back button to see your multitasking screen, and swiping down/pressing X on each app. Of course, 8.1 still being new to those not on the Preview, it doesn't apply to all apps yet.
