No notifications of whatsapp messages after updating OS to WP 8.1 on Lumia 520

Hi everyone!

One of my friends recently updated his Lumia 520 (att) to WP 8.1. After the update, he stopped receiving notifications for his whatsapp messages. He has to open the app to actually see if he got any messages or not. He tried to uninstall and reinstall the app, but got an error, saying 'whatsapp doesn't support your device's version of Windows Phone. Some features will not work properly'. I was just wondering if anyone else is facing the same issue and if there's any solution for this.

Everyone gets that "error" message, it's nothing to worry about. Does he have Battery Saver enabled? That will prevent WhatsApp from running in the background to check for new messages.

But doesn't that happen only when the battery is less than 20%? Because that's what usually happens on my Lumia 920...

You can set it to enable only when the battery is low, or to be on all the time. Check Settings -> battery saver. Also, swipe over the "usage" pane while you're there and make sure WhatsApp is allowed to run in the background. Another place to look is Settings -> notifications and actions.

I am on att with a 520 as well
I do get notifications tho. Did your friend try the settings inside WhatsApp and see if she has notifications turned on? Maybe change the sound to something else other than the default?

Whatsapp is allowed to run in the background even when battery saver is on. Checked all the other settings as well, everything seems alright...but don't know why I'm not receiving the notifications...thanks though!

Yeah, the notifications are turned on but she doesn't get them...she still has to open the app and check for any new messages...

Try reinstalling the app.. But before that take a back up of messages through WhatsApp setting.. This may fix this. I had also this issue.

On a lighter side.....The problem was with your friend's phone.....the problem was like 'He tried to.....' then you said "don't know why I'm not receiving..." and then "but she doesn't get them"

lol...true, the problem's on her phone...don't know why i said 'i'm not receiving'...probably because i was checking the issue on her phone at that time

Thats what I did to fix the problem I deleted then reinstalled the app. When the app reinstalled i t stated that it was not completely compatible with windows phone 8.1 but now works. Every one with the problem should send a message to whatapp like I did to get them to fix the app it seems to work better on other devices (support@whatsapp.com)
