Facebook chat not available

I recently upgraded from Windows 8.0 to 8.1 on my Lumia 520. Before upgrading I could chat with my contacts on facebook just using the same window as where I send texts, and I could just switch between Facebook and SMS whenever I wanted. Now that I've upgraded I can't do this anymore. I've checked all settings on my phone but can't find anything about it. I've also checked other forums but no one seems to be having the same problem.

You need to use messenger...

that functionality was removed because it was too outdated and didn't mesh completely right with facebook's messaging service.
best bet is the official Messenger app, or something else like IM+.

Facebook removed this for other platforms as well to allow better functionality with messaging and stop dual notifications. You can launch messenger from the facebook app from top right corner
