How to add subtitles in videos?

I can see the subtitles option off but how to add a subtitle?

A video you shot on the phone?

A video you imported to the phone for playback?

Two problems with two different answers...

A vid you shot on the phone > import to PC > upload to Movie Maker > add all the subtitles you want.

A vid imported to the phone for playback must have the subtitles encoded when it was put in the format you used... For example, when ripping a DVD and downconverting for small screen play, the option is in the ripper program. Once ripped and converted to format it is too late to add the subtitles back in. You have to rip and convert again and use the include subtitles option...

In wp8.1 I see option of subtitles but in light shades. So, what is it for?

It's for toggling subtitles off and on...

​It's greyed out when watching a file with no subtitles encoded.

Place the video, and an srt file using the same name with the language listed. For example: Movie.mp4 Movie.en.srt. Then you'll be able to toggle the subtitle on.
