S/MIME on a private phone?

WP 8.1 introduced support for S/MIME mail signing and encryption. But I fail at setting it up. Search the web points to MDM/EAS enterprise phone management which I don't understand. I was able to install my certificate but nothing more.

Is it possible to setup S/MIME encryption on a private phone?
