Message alert sound even if disabled (only when in messaging app)

Hi folks, curious issue here,

I have a Lumia 928 running WP 8.1 update 1 (Lumia Black) and no matter what I do in terms of settings (other than muting volume), I am getting a messaging alert sound when I am in the messaging app. The notification sound for messaging is "none" and when the phone is on the home screen or in another app there is no sound played when a message is received. Notification banner alerts are working correctly as well. For some reason however, I get a sound when I am in the messaging app and a messages is received. How can I turn this off? Is this normal?

Completely normal. Even in other apps, notification sound settings in the notification center settings do not affect in app sound. Like you mentioned, in app sounds are disabled by muting the Media + App volume.
