How do I get OS updates if I buy an unlocked 11520 phone?

I am ready to buy an unlocked Nokia 1520 (with AT&T frequencies including LTE) from either Newegg or B&H. I will use this as a bring-my-own on my current AT&T service. But, I am totally confused about how I get updates. Will I be able to get operating system updates if I buy an unlocked phone and if so, how? Will the "check for updates" function in the phone work? Who will it talk to if so .... Nokia? Microsoft? AT&T? Nobody? Assuming I can get updates, I am ready to replace my Samsung Galaxy Note. I Thanks!

The phone will talk directly to MS/Nokia by default, so you will be just fine since AT&T can't interfere with your updates here.
