Im not understanding how to unlock the phone.

If by unlocking you mean...
...your phone is locked, just press the lock button and swipe up on the lock screen(you may need to input your password).
...your phone is locked, and won't let you input your password: reset your phone. Hard reset, to be exact. It's the only way, according to Microsoft.
...your phone is tied to a carrier: Have it unlocked by the carrier itself, or try out various unlocking sites on the internet. I don't advise this, but it's a start.
