Are Nokia firmware updates always and everywhere only available via the carrier?

Beginning to wonder if I made a bad assumption ...
I live in Canada and just purchased a Lumia 930 from Amazon because there is no sign of any carrier here releasing it here. (I have checked that it will work on Canadian carriers.)
But, as I am switching from an iPhone, I assumed that any and all updates to the phone would be available directly from Microsoft/Nokia/Lumia as they are with Apple.
Is there any way to get firmware updates directly from Nokia? (I do use HMA VPN and could work with an IP just about anywhere.)

If your phone is unbranded as you said then yes, the updates would directly come from Microsoft

Or you can just flash your phone and change the firmware to a carrier who already has the latest and greatest updates out.
