Any substitute apps are available for MS office (specifically for creating and editing excel and word documents) in windows store??

re:

the basic office applications come with Windows Phone, and they work well enough for the small things I need to do on my phone. I don't think there are other apps that support the .docx, .xlsx file types on the phone.

Not in the Store. If you're running x86/x64 Windows 8/8.1 (not RT), you can search in a browser for LibreOffice, which is free.

If you are in windows there are tons of programs. Open Office is free and widely used, pretty good. Libre office like Laura said. A quick search will net you lots of free alternatives.
