So, I have an icon for about a week, and have another few days to decide if I want to keep it or return it. I'm a long time Android user who just got tired of it. Always liked the look and layout of windows phone, and love the hardware. While nit being exactly tech savy, I'm kinda nervous about keeping it because of some comments and posts I've seen about updates and such. I can't believe that the phone won't eventually be updated to 8.1. Are Verizon and Microsoft really going to shoot themselves in the foot by upsetting so many people? Not sure what to do, so any thought's or advice would be great. Thanks. !!!

Microsoft did commit publically to Cyan on the Icon post-retirement, but with no timeframe. So I believe 8.1/Cyan is an eventual lock. However, there is no guarantee of Denim or Windows 10 updates.

Best bet is to get an unlocked 1520.3 or 830 and use it on AT&T. Then you get guaranteed updates with service similar to Verizon.

If you want a Windows phone on Verizon, I recommend the HTC One. Or, if you just want to try Windows for a while, get a used 928, save your upgrade/purchase and see what happens in the next few months. The 928 is a good phone with a good camera and is pretty inexpensive to purchase outright. I would not recommend using an upgrade or contract purchase on the Icon right now.

Its a big reason why I left VZW a couple weeks ago. If you are a WP fan, Verizon is a terrible company to have your contract with. Which is too bad because the Icon was a great phone.

I second that. I tried one at MS store, and everything about it (save Glance, expandable storage, and Verizon) was good about it.

Go with att. Their phones are on cyan and looking forward to denim. Verizon? No timeline for any update and the icon is retired which means they have a ready made excuse to stop updating it. So cyan, denim, windows 10 are not guaranteed. Stay away if you want to enjoy WP.

Already am.
