New Whatsapp feature

I don't get this new whatsapp "READ" feature that has come out
1) if I'm in a group it says Read by (two blue ticks) and then nothing .. Just three dots .. And no time of reading.. (but people in the group have read it and responded)

2) if in a private chat and I send a message it says it has been read (again, two blue ticks) and three dots ...

3) it even says it has been read even if the person isn't online..

Yep... Same problem here. It said my messages got read when it didn't as I sent my daughter a text to try it out and her phone was right in front of me. She didn't pick it up but I got 2 ticks to say its been read

C'mon ppl, why so much attention to these blue ticks.

Just (white color) 2 check marks mean that the message has been delivered, not read. Which one are you referring to blue or white ones?

Depress the message sent and then click info and it will tell you the time of reading.

did you have whatsapp open already because if you did it would automatically show it as being read.

?? But that's silly don't you think.. The purpose of it is to tell me if the other person has read it or not and what time.. How can my whatsapp being open affect that?

One tick means sent to server
Two ticks mean sent to phone
Two blue ticks means read.

Ok. Problem sorted. The phone receiving the message had to be updated with the new whatsapp as well. Once they did that everything started working.
