Why does my new Micro SD card mess up my phone?

I recently purchased a Lexar Micro SDHC UHS-1 32GB card for my Nokia Lumia 521 running on 8.1, but when I booted up the phone with the card installed, every app (including the Phone and Messaging) would crash immediately after trying to load. On top of this, the action center tiles were blank and gray.

The only app I could open was the settings app, but any setting accessed through that would crash as well.

I turned off the phone and removed the Micro SD card, and the phone began functioning normally again.

So what's this card doing to my phone?

Where did you purchase it? Connect your phone to your computer and check the SD card contents. Then attempt to format it if nothing is on the card.
