is uding the volume button the only way to control the volume

The volume button became temperament to control volume. Sometime working, mostly not. should i manage to use button to turn up, id find within minutes it was back at zero volume. Also due to having to constantly turn phone up therefore due to this and also having to press button very hard, the components in and under button have broke. Love n need this phone (birthday pressie this year (April 2014) from my son, so my phone only 7 months old.

Unfortunately that's the only option available today. There are workarounds but they can only be used to get the job done, not quite a user friendly feature

Even if there is another way to control volume, if the volume keeps resetting to 0 it is likely due to a sticking volume down signal. Your phone is obviously broken, I would turn it in if under warranty. If it isn't then look on the internet for a disassembly video and see what is wrong with the button, sometimes a fix is as easy as popping off a shell and reseating the volume rocker.
