Is there a reason an iPhone should only get text messages through iMessage?

Never had iphone or iMessage but iphones send imessages to phone

My friend just got a new 635 when he moved from Verizon to Tmobile. Got a new number and everything. He's never had an iPhone or used iMessage before (was an android user prior to the 635).

Now he isn't getting texts from people with iPhones because their phones are automatically sending him iMessages.

Ive never even heard of this before, any suggestions? Could it be something with the SIM card that Tmobile needs to fix?

It probably means that whoever had that number before your friend had an iPhone and iMessage doesn't know it's no longer an iPhone. Have your friend go to this page - https://selfsolve.apple.com/deregister-imessage - and follow the directions in the "No longer have your iPhone?" section. Hopefully that clears it up.
