why is my phone not charging and working normally?

my nokia lumia 520 is not charging when the charger is connected and it will never show the homescreen or anything..... when the charger is inserted it shows a sign of charge and settings.It looks like its system is ok but it just doesn't charge.

Make sure there is no lint or debris in the charging/data port on the phone.

Use only the factory cable.

Do you ever get unexpected shutdowns? You may need to place a folded bit of paper (maybe 3 thicknesses) under the cover so it presses down on the battery and gets a better contact with the pins.

I know my old Lumia 521 had this issue still does, personally I think it was the using the phone while charging put a strain on the port. I got a charge for off and on alot
