Why won't my Windows 8 pc recognise my HTC wildfire phone?

why won't my windows 8 pc recognise my htc wildfire phone

I have connected my phone via usb cable. just want to upload some photos but despite different phone settings e,g usb tethering or disc drive .
, it won't recognise my device. in fact it does recognise the device but
says it is unknown.

Download a new driver for whatever the assist program is that would normally appear.
