How do I unlock my phone if the unlock button isn't working?

I have a Lumia 520 and when I press the lock/unlock button nothing happens, but when I hold it he works fine appearing the message to slide down to power off. Someone know what happens?

Its a hardware issue, could be a liquid spill? Try opening the back cover and cleaning the contacts with iso-propyl alcohol or any electric circuit cleaner. If it doesn't work then send it for repair

I would not use iso propl alcohol, leaves some oxidation behind. I would use ethanol instead. Otherwise, this is a great answer.

Interesting, i usually use iso-propyl alcohol for cleaning electronic pcb boards or in general electricals, learnt it from my dad who used to work with radar communication system at the atc. Either way, thanks for the tip!

I meant to say " it leaves some residue behind". Ethanol is one of the purest forms of alcohol.

Switch the phone off and then switch on, you have now unlocked the screen. Voila
