Why isn't my phone giving me a choice to text or call a contact but calls them immediately?

I choose a contact and the phone calls it immediately

It doesn't give me a choice to text or call

Are you tapping on a contact from the People tab, or are you tapping the phone book button in the dialer app?

My wife does this all the time. If you are in the dialer, and hit the phone book buton, as soon as you tap on a name, it will dial it. But if you go to the People tab and find a contact, it will give you the option to call, text, email, tweet, drive to their house, etc.

Additionally, if you are in the dialer, you can select the icon to the right of the name and that will open up the contact's profile and give you the option to call or text.

Additionally, if applicable, you can tell Cortana to "Text xxxx" or "Call xxxx"; (if you're set up for that)

Sometimes I forget that those are there. I still keep hitting the back button to get out of the app instead of holding the back button and x it out.
