Contacts surnames appear as Middle names?

I've recently been given a Lumia 635 as my company phone when I transferred my contacts from my old blackberry some the contacts I had entered manually in the blackberry the surnames now show up in the middle name area instead so when you search for contacts I now have for example 7 Brian's and I have to open the contact to find which is which does anyone know a simple way to change them all or must I transfer the names manually?

Go to PEOPLE hub > than push the three dots ... on the bottom right and go to settings.
There you can change the sorting.

Thanks but unfortunately it doesn't help as the names appear as middle names not surnames when they've transferred so cannot sort that way.

Unfortunately indeed. But welcome to Windows Central. Maybe someone else will give you a solution.
On the other hand maybe changing them by hand is faster than finding a tool or "trick".
Anyway we hope that we can give you a more usefull answer on your next question.
