Why won't my Windows 8 laptop connect to my phone?

I have connected my Samsung phone to my Windows 8 laptop through a USB cable and every time i try to open the device on my computer it says that it cannot connect and that I need to check that the phone is on and that it is properly configured. How can i get my phone to connect properly?? Please help and thankyou

Have you al the drivers installed? If no, install them. If yes, delete them and let windows detect your device again and let him install the necessary drivers.
