Is my Surface 3 actually sleeping?

[Windows Central Question]

Is my surface 3 actually sleeping

Several times I have put the surface into sleep mode by either ...

Closing the lid whilst on battery mode,
Pressing the off button
or
going to the start menu and pressing sleep.

I then put it into my briefcase ...

When I get it out sometimes it is red hot.....

Do I need to turn it off completely?
