Is it an .XLS file? I think we can only edit the newer .XLSX file format.

Can you be more specific about what kind of error message is displayed when you go ahead and edit the file?
Also make sure if you are using OneDrive for storing the file and accessing it both in your phone and PC, editing won't work on both!. You need to close the file on laptop first!

It might be locked and u can't enable editing on the phone like on windows pc

its not possible to edit excel files those which are password protected. you can still edit those in your laptops or pcs. here is procedure to edit the xls file in windows phone excel

# first open the file in microsft excel on your pc
# then save it again as new format means earlier it would be in ( excel 97 -2003) now save it as (microsoft excel worksheet)
# now copy it in your phone
# you can edit it now
