How can I get the content I am typing on my Microsoft Surface to shift upward so that I can see everything I am typing?

Microsoft Surface onscreen keyboard Windows 8.1 question

On my Dell tablet Windows 8.1 when I use the onscreen keyboard the content of the screen shifts upward so what I'm typing isn't covered by the keyboard. My Surface Windows 8.1 doesn't do that which is very inconvenient as I can't see what I'm typing unless turn it sideways into portrait mode. Is there an adjustment for this? I hate the Dell and love the Surface except for this keyboard issue.
