How can i totally disable apps and programmes updating automatically

Hi
Just got burned with a ?50 charge for using 300+mb of data over my 1GB allowance with Talk Talk. Although they say they will send you a text when you have used 50% and 80% of your data there is a 48 hour delay in them receiving the information to be able to inform you of the situation. Even though you can set a limit as a buffer of ?1.00 or ?25 it makes no difference they can still charge you an open ended amount for data used at 15p per megabite. They suspended my account until i paid the excess and so i paid it but i want to ensure this does not happen again so what do i need to do to the phone to ensure that apps and programmes are not downloaded even when i am using mobile data ( tethering) to an ipad. Any help would really be appreciated.

Store ??? Settings -- Update apps automatically - turn it off

Open the STORE app
Push the 3 dots ...
Go to settings
There you can set "Only get updates over WiFi" to ON.
Furthermore you can set the sync of your accounts to manual. (settings > e-mails+accounts > your accounts.
Only your main account you can not set to manual but you could set it on daily.
And check apps like WhatsApp how they update.
And the app Data Sense may help to prevent that you go over your limit.

Store ••• Settings -- Update apps automatically - turn it off

Also Settings > phone update > uncheck the box for automatically download updates (it is enabled by default).

Do yourself a big favor... Go to Data Sense in your App list and pin that to Start. Place the live tile on the top part of Start so you see it often. You can set it up inside so it knows your limit and what day of the month your plan ends. Track that cellular data like a boss!!!

Hi Guys i had to register to make a reply but thanks for all your helpful advice. This 900 mb of data usage happened within a 30 minute period and because talk talk run on Vodaphone network there is a 48 hour delay before they can advise what is used and even if you put a limit on your account of ?1 , ?25 or more they can still charge an open ended amount for the data.

This may be a stupid question but is it possible in Data Sense to somehow make the data cut off when you reach your set limit or is it not possible on this type of phone. I will try all the things suggested.

Data Sense can place restrictions on Background Data use to prevent accidental triggering by automatic data demands. But I don't think it will stop manual requests... It might warn you when you near your cap or exceed it and you make a manual request for data.

Another tool is WiFi Sense. You can set that to automatically connect to WiFi hotspots and that will save data as well... But then you are running a lot on open networks so use your discretion there.

Thanks again Rumoured Now.

When you go into setting and select internet sharing and then switch the option on for using the phone effectively as a wifi hotspot it gives me the impression that this is password protected so that no other phone or device can latch on and use the data unless it has the password input. Am i right to assume this.

You are correct it is password protected.
But if you used 900mb in 30 minutes then it is probably the iPad which used it and settings in your phone can not really "prevent" this.

One more thing about the tethering i do not think it is valid for your case but it makes the question more complete.
If you have a windows phone and bluetooth is on then you see the phones wifi network name (even when you did not enable internet sharing on your phone) on a tablet or pc or laptop if you paired it with your phone and bluetooth is switched on on that device. And if you tap on this network on your tablet it will connect without a password is needed.
This is valid for windows devices so i am not sure if it is also the case for an Ipad.
So yes the internet sharing is password protected except in above case.

Thanks for that information Harry, i think you could be right re the ipad. The only doubt would be that i thought i read somewhere that the max download of any ipad app or update would be 100mb.

This is where the Tethering, Mobile and Wifi terms get confusing

Indeed also for windows phone there is a cap of 100 mb for OTA updates but your iPad was not connected to "cellular data" but to a "wifi"
Or in other words your iPad is connected to wifi (and has no "idea" that is coming from a cellular connection so no cap on OTA size) and your windows phone does not "know" that your iPad is doing an "OTA update" so it also does not use the 100mb cap.

Actual this "trick" is used in areas where there is no wifi and you still want to download larger updates or games from the store.
They use 2 phones, one provides the wifi and the other phone gets the update so bypassing the OTA restriction.
