Is it possible to unlock a no-contract AT&T Lumia 830?

[Windows Central Question]

I managed to get the Lumia 830 + Fitbit bundle for $200 from the deal that was posted on WC recently. I am not an ATT customer and would like to use the phone outside of the United States.

Has anyone had luck on getting a no contract phone from ATT unlocked officially from ATT? I obviously have no service contract with ATT and can ask my friend to request an unlock code for me (she is an ATT customer with no phone on contract currently)

What's my best option here?

it can be done by you. here's how
go to att.com/deviceunlock accept terms and conditions
then on the form select non-att mobility customer and fill out the appropriate information

AT&T has really relaxed about unlocks. I've never been a customer of theirs and they've unlocked 3 phones for me recently. If you get an error, retry. Sometimes a sleepy worker makes a mistake.

In that case, what's the disadvantage of going for a cheaper no-contract phone over an unlocked one?
