The problem is it's tiny storage. I have added no new apps, or pictures or music - and it will only let me text or make calls. Emails can't come in as it's full. i can't delete anything else - as it's the system files taking up all the room. i can't see how to fit an SD card - no slot - so how do i make this work???

Actual you pointed allready out the problem, the limited internal memory.
I am not sure but did you already use below settings?
What you could try in in settings > emails+accounts > tap the account and change the "Download email from" to 3 or 7 days. In this cause only the latest emails are stored on your phone.
And/or in the email app go to settings
( push the 3 dots) and disable "Always download the full message and internet image"
