Why doesn't my phone's text messaging app open?

My phone's text messaging app doesn't open

The text messaging app that is built into the phone will not open. I push its button, and the app opens and shows all text conversation threads for a few moments before closing and returning to the start screen. What's going on? Your help is appreciated greatly. I have the phone on auto-update, so updating the software should not be an issue.

Just out of curiosity, have you completely shut down your phone, then powered it back on?
Not sure what would cause that issue though.
