Why can't I share, edit or send photos?

I have a nokia lumia 635 and up until these last couple of days, it had been running smoothly for about a year. Lately, I can't open any images sent to me through text message. I also have photos that I want to upload but anytime I select a photo to upload to instagram, facebook, or even just to edit it somewhere, it just goes back to the homescreen instead of selecting the photo. Any suggestions?
