Buying a sealed SP3 on eBay - is the warranty valid?

I'm considering buying a sealed SP3 on eBay. They're not an authorised reseller of SP3. Will the 1 year warranty still be valid?

I think that depends on its purchase date. MS may be able to tell you the status if you know the serial number.

I bought a secondhand ThinkPad recently and while it was used, the warranty was still valid.
