My 8x wi-fi is acting strange

I created an ad hoc network on my laptop and when I turned on my windows 8x Wi-fi it sees all the other Wi-fi networks except the one I just created. My iPhone sees the ad hoc network. Also my laptop cannot see my phones SSID. It's like they are invisible to each other. I tried the same thing with another laptop running windows 7 home premium and got the same results. What's going on here? I cannot manually put in the laptop's SSID. When I do it says that the connection was unsuccessful. I've tried everything. My 8x sees all the other networks in my area. Please help
