I want to try out Windows 10 Phone software. But not on my Lumia 1520, which I need to depend on. So, so I thought I'd get a cheapish Lumia to play around with.

1) can I get literally any Lumia (or are some not capable enough)
2) any recommendations on which Lumia?

Thanks in advance.

635 seems to be quite popular as a test vehicle for 10... Avoid any dual SIM.

If you can you may want to bump up to 1GB ram... A used 925 might not be a bad choice either if you want a last gen flagship as a device to keep.

Hi there. I have a lumia 520 and I found it ok. Its great to hear your not putting it on your main phone (I had it on my main phone without issue but to be on the safe side keep it to a test phone). Make sure to register as a windows insider first, download subsequent app and your good to go.

**Note make sure not to use it on your main phone as it can cause a brick when downgrading back please use caution**

I've been an Android user for the last few years and late last year when I heard all the good that Win 10 was going to bring I thought I'd give Windows phone a look. I picked up a 635 at Best Buy for $30.00. During the week I was using my Galaxy Note 2 with the sim and the 635 on WiFi. Then on the weekends I flipped them. Abut 2-3 weeks ago I dropped my Note 2 and the screen splintered and since I didn't want glass in my ear I began using the 635 everyday. I has Win10 on it for awhile and with the last 2 updates things weren't working as well as before and since I needed this phone to work I went back to 8.1.

Some of problems I had were with email app. My Outlook account was fine but my Gmail and work account had lots of problems. I'm waiting for the next release to come out and I'll try it again. I have no problem over the weekend to switch OS and if it doesn't work to go back.

With all this said I am very hopeful and optimistic that later this year (hopefully) when the final version of Windows 10 for phone and some new handsets come out things will be very good. I believe with the uniformity between Win 10 on all devices we'll see a lot of new apps, even very popular ones come through.
