Is anything beyond Windows Defender actually required? I would imagine that something is strongly advisable, but is there a preferred security suite (anti-virus, malware, firewall) for the Surface 3?

Many thanks.

I've been using Windows Defender (was Microsoft Security Essentials in Windows 7) since it's released and haven't faced any security issue, afterall the best antivirus is common sense.

But if you love to install random programs from the internet or visit many shady and unknown websites, Avast! is my recommendation.

I like NOD32 from ESET for my PCs. It is lightweight and does not slow down my PCs. I've been using it for 6 years now upon recommendation from a friend who is a Network Admin at a business.

Agreeing with the two above. If you can, you won't regret paying for NOD32. Silent, effective and does everything for you in the background with light use of system resources. I use Avast! Free Edition on my SP2 and that also works quite well - although it takes a small amount of battery off it's worth it.
