Why is Windows Update so slow?

I'm planning on upgrading to windows 8.1 from windows 8. I find the button in the store, and it doesn't download, and it tells me to install updates first. I search for them, and I get 165 essential ones, and 5 optional ones. I go to the windows help website, and I find an update code ( a code of a particular update e.g. KB209311 ) and I can't find it in the update box. So I just tick all of the essential ones, and I've waited for nearly 2 hours for 165 updates to download (1655 MB). Is this supposed to be the length of the waiting time? I really want to just get through it and get windows 8.1 .

That's normal. You're getting every Patch Tuesday update that's been available since Windows 8.1 has been released.

Once you finish the updates, you'll just get the normal Patch Tuesday updates which won't take so long.
