Clarification of office 365 on mobile

So today I tried to edit a document on my lumia phone. I was told that to do so id need a subscription to office365. I was under the influence that on mobiles/small tablets id be able to do editing but on bigger devices id need a subscription. Can someone please clarify what exactly is the real scenario? I was able to edit documents a few days ago via mobile.

Are you running the Windows 10 Insider Preview and using the Office Preview apps? If so there may be a bug that prevents editing without an Office 365 subscription. I had the same problem during the preview period on the desktop.

Microsoft have confirmed that you will be able to edit and create Office documents without an Office 365 subscription on a phone.

Ok. Well I subscribed to office as I needed it on the go today. At least I got a free month that I can cancel
