Windows Central Question

I had a laptop which ran on Windows 7 Ultimate around four years ago (I had it updated.) and while I was downloading programs for it, I was prompted to update my system to Windows 7 Service Pack 1 first before I could install my other programs. I did just that, but for some reason, my product activation seemed to have messed up, and from that point, my laptop constantly prompted me that my copy of Windows wasn't genuine. That problem was solved after almost half a year.

Today, I use another laptop which runs on Windows 8.1, and which I got about two years ago. Seeing that I'm about to be prompted to update my system to Windows 10, I'm worried that this dilemma might happen again after I install it. I wanted to make sure of this so I could think over the update in time.

Do you think I would get a "Your copy of Windows is not genuine" message after the upgrade to Windows 10? Or is it that the update will not affect my activation?

You should have been able to get the Windows 7 license activated again by reaching out to MS. Regardless if you face a similar situation again do not hesitate to contact MS support.

Don't think that will be an issue, as long as your copy is genuine. MS only stated that those with pirated versions will not be able to upgrade to 10, so once your request goes in, your system is scanned (or sth along those lines) to check. If your copy of windows is pirated, the update will not happen

I would go for the w7 since it was ultimate :D but then again, downgrading from 8.1 to 7 just to go back up to 10 would take a lot of time...
