Does cortana respond to typed commands?

I can only seem to get Cortana to respond to voice. When I type in a question, she will only search the web or my computer.

As we've found on Windows Phone though, Cortana and her answers can in some instances go straight to a search, regardless of the method of interaction. This can happen rarely and randomly, Cortana's off-days in a sense. She is pretty much entirely cloud-based, so this may be down to a temporary fault, strain on the system (she's getting a lot more users than ever before!) or just a weird bug.

Regardless, if she's processing what you type but then only giving you search results back, I'd say that's a issue with her and her online system, and definitely not your device or anything. Can't guarantee it, but it sounds it to me.

I'd give it a while and see what happens.
