After Windows 10 update my Toshiba laptop fails to play ANY sound, what gives?

Windows Central Question

After Windows 10 update my Toshiba laptop fails to play ANY sound

My computer is a Toshiba Satellite L750 AMD E- 350 laptop with sound controllers AMD High Definition Audio Device and Conexant SmartAudio HD installed.
There are no conflicts in device manager and all services are running. However when trying to run the audio test I only get a message "failed to play test tone".
