What happened to my password when I installed Windows 10?

Windows Central Question

After I installed Windows 10 I tried entering the password that I used with Windows 7. I was told that it was incorrect. When I tried to reset it asked me to insert a USB device. I tried a thumbdrive but I was told that it was not a password reset device. What gives?
