Why does my monitor go blank when I try to use extended desktop?

I am running Windows 7 on an HP G62 laptop. When I try to use extended desktop with my Dell monitor, the monitor screen goes blank after a few seconds. When I shut off the monitor then turn it back on, the monitor again works for a few seconds but then the screen again goes blank. Can anyone help?
