w10 start, search, active center and edge don't work - why?

W10 was downloaded and installed automatically. Initially the start menu worked - well, once, active centre will not open to read notifications, the search option doesn't work - you can't enter a search into it and click on the Edge logo in the quick launch bar and the screen flashes blue and that's that. If you right click on the start menu another menu comes up but only those functions with options work - all others do not - and the cursor doesn't work on this secondary menu either.
