Windows Central Question

can I move windows 10?

My computer has been struggling. I need to upgrade it. It was grinding away with w8.1.
now with w10 it freezes, locks up and reboots by itself, and does some other funny stuff. I want to build a new computer and put w10 on it.
I think I can by doing this:
Create a w10 dvd. write down my product id number.
build my new computer then install w10 from the dvd and enter my product code.
Will that do it? Can it be this easy?
thanks in advance

Re: can I move windows 10?

Hmm, I think you would need the license key, not the product code or product ID number. This license key is automatically generated during the upgrade process if you're upgrading from a legitimate copy of Windows 7, 8 or 8.1. Hence, it appears that you would need to upgrade to Windows 10 first (which you've already done), try to find the installed license key in the registry (if it can be found at all), copy that license key *(if found) and use that when prompted during the installation of Windows 10 hoping that it will work.

So, no, it doesn't appear to be that easy.
