Windows Central Question

Hi all,

I've been using the Lumia 640 for about 2 months and have loved it (using 8.1 Update 2 which, I think, comes pre-installed on the phone). Enjoying my first windows phone experience, I managed to find a great deal for a Lumia 930 handset, and since it's got better hardware that the 640 and also has the capacity for "Hey Cortana", I snapped it up!

My question is:

On a completely new Lumia 930, what updates should I apply to get it up to speed? Ideally I want to be running Windows 8.1 Update 2, that's the dream.

-I've read some information online saying that the only way to upadate it is to download the Windows Insider App and go through that, so I'm currently in the process of doing that. But I've also heard that Update 2 isn't available anymore and you can only get Windows10, the another source says that you can't get Windows10 for the 930 at all, and someone else says that in order to get Windows10 you need to first get 8.1 Update 2. So, there are lots of conflicting bits of information out there and I'd like to know what one is currently correct? :)

Cheers,

John

Hi, and welcome to the fold.

As I understand it, updating to GDR 2 is part of the process of installing Window 10. At first some people used it to get GDR 2, but then woke up one morning running Windows 10 and had to roll back!

There isn't actually that much in GDR 2 of it to be worth the effort, though using a Bluetooth keyboard is supported and you get the nicer System menus. Otherwise 8.1 GDR 1 runs extremely well.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your input. I think I'm the kind of person who will get annoyed if I'm not using the most current version of something, especially if I've already used that most-current-version. For instance with the systems menu, I'd definitely think "grr, this is so slow and complicated by comparison!", so I'm going to attempt to upgrade.

So far, I have installed Windows Insider and applied an update. I put myself on the 'slow' update choice for Windows Insider. I also read online that if you want it to only install Windows 8.1 Upgrade 2 and NOT Windows 10 afterwards, then you need to uninstall Windows Insider app after the first upgrade is downloaded, but before it's installed! Seems mad to me, but that's what I've done. So yeah, the first upgrade has been applied and now... everything's in Dutch... Haha. It says it's applying updates 20 of 24 at the moment so I'll let you know how that works out... :P

Cheers again,

John

Great, well that was a monumental fail. After figuring out how to change the language from Dutch to English I've determined that I'm now running Windows 10 -_- Guess I'll give it a go...

I understand you, however the update 2 isnt even official and therefore there may be annoyances here and there. I personally think denim does a great job on itself. I say so because i decided to get the latest update which was not available in the country the phone was meant for. Long story short, it was pretty much a mess and glad i sorted it out with some help.

Ultimately its up to you and whether you think the risk is worth it, from your reply, i guess to you it is~
