Why did my contacts, text messages, and pictures get deleted?

Yesterday my phone died and I left it at home to charge while I went out. When I came back I noticed that all of its text messages and photos were gone, but just kind of shrugged it off. However, today when I opened up my contacts I noticed that the majority of them are gone. It's even weirder because while the majority of the contacts are gone there are still 15-20 left. On closer inspection of the numbers that are left, it seems like I have probably gotten all but one of them within the last 4 or 5 months, but I don't know why that would effect it at all. Is there a way that I can get back my last contacts, and less importantly pictures, and least importantly text messages?
