how long does it take to upgarde

how long does it take for the upgrade to complete as I was told about an hour and 4hrs later it still says working on it and can I turn my laptop off or do I have to wait until it is completed

My desktop does it rather quickly, 30-40 minutes. With a Surface 3 it feels like it might be 2 or 3 hours.

Where is it stuck? I've seen some installs that get stuck but after a forced reboot they seem fine. I'd caution against that but the installer is rather robust.
