Why am I unable to connect to wifi on my desktop (Windows 10)?

can't connect to wifi on desktop (windows 10)

so I have just moved in to my student accommodation, and can't get my desktop to connect to the wireless WiFi, I can't find how to get the list of connections that are available in my area so I can select the right one and enter the password windows have to complicate everything I have the network settings icon in my system tray with the x in the corner
